Book Reviews

Wrap Up | June 2017

Hello bookworms! I’m Nia and today I’m going to be talking about my June wrap-up!

I’m beyond happy by my reading plans this month because I’ve read 13 books! Yeah, I can’t believe it either. Usually my average ranting is 10 books per month but I’m really surprised for this month’s quantity. Hopefully next month would be as good or better than this one.

So I’m just going to stop gabbling and start talking about the books I’ve read in June!

Side note: If you see RTC in any of those books, that means I’m going to post a review very soon where I talk more in depth about my opinion of this book.

PS: If you want me to do a review of the books I haven’t let me know in the comments below, please!

Dangerous Boys | Abigail Haas

Synopsis

Three teens venture into the abandoned Monroe estate one night; hours later, only two emerge from the burning wreckage. Chloe drags one Reznick brother to safety, unconscious and bleeding; the other is left to burn, dead in the fire. But which brother survives? And is his death a tragic accident? Desperate self-defense? Or murder?

Chloe is the only one with the answers. As the fire rages, and police and parents demand the truth, she struggles to piece together the story of how they got there-a story of jealousy, twisted passion, and the darkness that lurks behind even the most beautiful of faces…

Synopsis

No one is entirely certain what brings the Emperor Sikander to Shalingar. Until now, the idyllic kingdom has been immune to his many violent conquests. To keep the visit friendly, Princess Amrita has offered herself as his bride, sacrificing everything—family, her childhood love, and her freedom—to save her people. But her offer isn’t enough.

The unthinkable happens, and Amrita finds herself a fugitive, utterly alone but for an oracle named Thala, who was kept by Sikander as a slave and managed to escape amid the chaos of a palace under siege. With nothing and no one else to turn to, Amrita and Thala are forced to rely on each other. But while Amrita feels responsible for her kingdom and sets out to warn her people, the newly free Thala has no such ties. She encourages Amrita to go on a quest to find the fabled Library of All Things, where it is possible for each of them to reverse their fates. To go back to before Sikander took everything from them.

Stripped of all that she loves, caught between her rosy past and an unknown future, will Amrita be able to restore what was lost, or does another life—and another love—await?

My thoughts: The main reason I’ve picked this book up was because it was set in the 90s, and I am myself a 90s girl. So even though I was really young I still remember some bands and shows I loved and that I wanted to see in here. It wasn’t especially focused on that but I did get the 90s vibe incorporated in the pop bands stuff related.

Overall I think it’s a cute romance and summer story and I liked the friendship and everything related to that but it wasn’t mindblowing. But it was really quick and fast and I had a good time reading it (since I was in the middle of a reading slump).

Synopsis

It was always meant to be Olivia. She was the talented one, the one who had been training to be a star her whole life. Her best friend, Dana, was the level-headed one, always on the sidelines, cheering her best friend along.

But everything changes when Dana tags along with Olivia to Orlando for the weekend, where superproducer Guy Monroe is holding auditions for a new singing group, and Dana is discovered too. Dana, who’s never sung more than Olivia’s backup. Dana, who wasn’t even looking for fame. Next thing she knows, she and Olivia are training to be pop stars, and Dana is falling for Alex, the earnest, endlessly talented boy who’s destined to be the next big thing.

It should be a dream come true, but as the days of grueling practice and constant competition take their toll, things between Olivia and Dana start to shift . . . and there’s only room at the top for one girl. For Olivia, it’s her chance at her dream. For Dana, it’s a chance to escape a future that seems to be closing in on her. And for these lifelong best friends, it’s the adventure of a lifetime—if they can make it through.

Synopsis

Trudchen grew up hearing Odette’s stories of their monster-slaying mother and a magician’s curse. But now that Tru’s older, she’s starting to wonder if her older sister’s tales were just comforting lies, especially because there’s nothing fantastic about her own life—permanently disabled and in constant pain from childhood polio.

In 1909, after a two-year absence, Od reappears with a suitcase supposedly full of weapons and a promise to rescue Tru from the monsters on their way to attack her. But it’s Od who seems haunted by something. And when the sisters’ search for their mother leads them to a face-off with the Leeds Devil, a nightmarish beast that’s wreaking havoc in the Mid-Atlantic states, Tru discovers the peculiar possibility that she and her sister—despite their dark pasts and ordinary appearances—might, indeed, have magic after all.

My thoughts: I loooved this book so much! Bands and singer based books are some of my guilty pleasures and I had so much fun reading this book! I’ve previously read their other novels, Paper Princess and its sequel and the authors do an amazing job to get you hooked! It’s really addicting and it gave me so many summer vibes I could not put it down. If you like the old school Disney Channel movies, such as Camp Rock or Starstruck, definitely pick this one up.

Also let me know if you want me to do a full review of this book because I’m still on the fence about doing one!

My thoughts: This was an okay book to me. I loved the romance and both characters were super cute together (I wish I’d seen more romance), but it was quite trope-y for me. The story wasn’t very different from anything I’ve read before, and I would have preffer to see more about their relationship that other things that felt unnecesary. It still was a very quick and fun read and I enjoyed it, hence why I gave it 3.5 stars.

Again let me know if you’d like to see a review of this book and I’ll do it!
