CONTEMPORARY, TOP 5 TUESDAY, Young Adult

Hogwarts Book Recommendations: Hufflepuff | T5T

Hello bookworms! I’m Nia and today I’m going to recommending some books for all you Hufflepuffs out there!

Now I’m sorry in advance because I couldn’t find any fantasy or non contemporary books for this post, but I don’t know why Hufflepuff to me screams adorable contemporary romances, so yup. Sorry if you were expecting some fantasy, because there isn’t.

If you aren’t familiar with Top 5 Tuesday, it is a group here on WordPress now currently run by Shanah over at BionicBookWorm, where each week they give you a topic and you talk about 5 books that fit that category.

Without any further ado, let’s start with this week’s topic!

Always Never Yours | Emily Wibberley & Austin Siegemund-Broka

34092885

My thoughts: Personally, even though this was a recent read of mine, I fell absolutely in love with the story and the characters, and found it such a heart warming and adorable story that I had to mention it in here. If you’re looking for a fun and cute book, look no further.

Shouldn’t a girl get to star in her own love story?

Seventeen-year-old Megan Harper is about due for her next sweeping romance. It’s inevitable—each of her relationships starts with the perfect guy and ends with him falling in love . . . with someone else. But instead of feeling sorry for herself, Megan focuses on pursuing her next fling, directing theater, and fulfilling her dream college’s acting requirement in the smallest role possible.

So when she’s cast as Juliet (yes, that Juliet) in her high school’s production, it’s a complete nightmare. Megan’s not an actress, and she’s used to being upstaged—both in and out of the theater. In fact, with her mom off in Texas and her dad remarried and on to baby #2 with his new wife, Megan worries that, just like her exes, her family is moving on without her.

Then she meets Owen Okita, an aspiring playwright inspired by Rosaline from Shakespeare’s R+J. A character who, like Megan, knows a thing or two about short-lived relationships. Megan agrees to help Owen with his play in exchange for help catching the eye of a sexy stagehand/potential new boyfriend. Yet Megan finds herself growing closer to Owen, and wonders if he could be the Romeo she never expected.

In their fresh and funny debut, Emily Wibberly and Austin Siegemund-Broka break down the high school drama to find there’s always room for familial love, romantic love, and—most importantly—self-love.

The Way You Make Me Feel | Maureen Goo

35704397

My thoughts: This book was so good, and I was so pleasantly surprised by it. Even though it had a romance, I would say that the main focus of the story was family and friendship, and they both were amazing, so I think so many people would enjoy this novel.

Clara Shin lives for pranks and disruption. When she takes one joke too far, her dad sentences her to a summer working on his food truck, the KoBra, alongside her uptight classmate Rose Carver. Not the carefree summer Clara had imagined. But maybe Rose isn’t so bad. Maybe the boy named Hamlet (yes, Hamlet) crushing on her is pretty cute. Maybe Clara actually feels invested in her dad’s business. What if taking this summer seriously means that Clara has to leave her old self behind?

Geekerella | Ashley Poston

30724132

My thoughts: When I read this for the first time a couple of years ago, I really enjoyed the story and the characters and found that it was such a light hearted read, and it’s a contemporary retelling, so I think this would be a perfect read for most Hufflepuffs.

Geek girl Elle Wittimer lives and breathes Starfield, the classic science-fiction series she grew up watching with her late father. So when she sees a cosplay contest for a new Starfield movie, she has to enter. The prize? An invitation to the ExcelsiCon Cosplay Ball and a meet-and-greet with the actor slated to play Federation Prince Carmindor in the reboot. With savings from her gig at the Magic Pumpkin food truck and her dad’s old costume, Elle’s determined to win – unless her stepsisters get there first.

Teen actor Darien Freeman used to live for cons – before he was famous. Now they’re nothing but autographs and awkward meet-and-greets. Playing Carmindor is all he has ever wanted, but Starfield fandom has written him off as just another dumb heartthrob. As ExcelsiCon draws near, Darien feels more and more like a fake – until he meets a girl who shows him otherwise. But when she disappears at midnight, will he ever be able to find her again?

Queens of Geek | Jen Wilde

28245707

My thoughts: This was such a fun and fast paced book, and I think Hufflepuffs would really enjoy it if they pick it up, because not only it’s a very short book, but there are two romantic relationships that are so freaking adorable.

Charlie likes to stand out. She’s a vlogger and actress promoting her first movie at SupaCon, and this is her chance to show fans she’s over her public breakup with co-star Reese Ryan. When internet-famous cool-girl actress Alyssa Huntington arrives as a surprise guest, it seems Charlie’s long-time crush on her isn’t as one-sided as she thought.

Taylor likes to blend in. Her brain is wired differently, making her fear change. And there’s one thing in her life she knows will never change: her friendship with her best guy friend Jamie—no matter how much she may secretly want it to. But when she hears about a fan contest for her favorite fandom, she starts to rethink her rules on playing it safe.

Foolish Hearts | Emma Mills

33275690

My thoughts: This is pretty much a similar situation to what happened with Always Never Yours, but I think that there are some characters in this story that Hufflepuffs could relate to, and not only that but it’s a book about friendship and accepting yourself.

The day of the last party of the summer, Claudia overhears a conversation she wasn’t supposed to. Now on the wrong side of one of the meanest girls in school, Claudia doesn’t know what to expect when the two are paired up to write a paper—let alone when they’re both forced to try out for the school production of A Midsummer Night’s Dream.

But mandatory participation has its upsides—namely, an unexpected friendship, a boy band obsession, and a guy with the best dimpled smile Claudia’s ever seen. As Claudia’s world starts to expand, she finds that maybe there are some things worth sticking her neck out for.
